The Cincinnati Bengals: Look to Claw Into the Playoffs Without Joe Burrow
Joe Burrow tore a ligament in his wrist on Thursday and will undergo season-ending surgery.
“It’s tough…But that’s part of the game, been through it before, so just gotta grind it out,” said Burrow in response to the news that he will miss the remainder of the 2023 season. The former Heisman Trophy winner went 11-of-17 for 101 yards and a touchdown before departing.
Burrow is among the best quarterbacks in the NFL. The six-foot-four gunslinger threw for 4,475 yards and 35 scores to 12 picks last season, finishing fourth in MVP voting and earning his first Pro Bowl nod. Burrow also posted big numbers in 2021, tossing 34 touchdowns on a league-best 70.4 completion percentage while winning AP Comeback Player of the Year. His career 98.6 quarterback rating remains among the best among active signal callers in the NFL.
The book will close on Burrow this season, with him finishing with 2,309 yards and 15 touchdowns against six picks. The Bengals will now turn to Jake Browning to lead the offense for the remainder of the season. The Washington product went 8-of-14 for 68 yards and a score in relief of Burrow on Thursday. Browning was an undrafted free agent with the Minnesota Vikings in 2019 and never completed an NFL pass before last night. However, he threw 94 touchdowns in college with the Washington Huskies, including 43 as a sophomore in 2016. NFL fans will need to wait and see if Browning can lead the Bengals back into the postseason.
