The NFL is making an effort to expand the game internationally. Games overseas have been commonplace in the last decade but now they are taking it a step further. The league will expand practice squads starting in 2024 to accommodate more international players.
NFL To Expand Practice Squads For International Players
The International Player Pathway (IPP) program launched in 2017 is the league’s initiative to get more international players on rosters. Currently, there are only five international players on active rosters. In 2024, practice squads will expand to 17 players for all 32 clubs with the extra spot being reserved for an international player. Peter O’Reilly, NFL Executive Vice President, Club Business, Major Events & International had this to say about the change.
“The practice squad roster expansion for international players will further contribute to our goal of building a sustainable pathway to the NFL for elite global athletes, while also creating local connections with fans around the world. With the support of all 32 clubs, the NFL International Committee, the NFL Competition Committee and the NFL Players Association, we look forward to implementing this new model to benefit the game long-term and welcome more international talent into our League in the years to come.”
International Expansion Coming?
There continues to be a record number of games overseas. While London still continues to be a staple, Germany has now entered the mix. This season, the Jaguars will be in London for two straight weeks to give fans a good look at the team. Roger Goodell has not been shy about his plans for international expansion. While that comes with its own challenges, it is clear the league wants the game of football to be a more international sport.
Will we see more players from overseas on active rosters? Starting in 2024, there will definitely be more opportunities.
