The Dallas Cowboys are being urged to sign a former first-round pick after the 53-man roster deadline passed Tuesday afternoon. The Cowboys have a couple of offensive playmakers, but quarterback Dak Prescott could use more this season to help the team make a deep playoff run this offseason.
The Cowboys lost an essential piece of their 2022 offense this offseason after tight end Dalton Schultz signed with the Houston Texans in free agency. The Cowboys will rely on second-year tight end Jake Ferguson and rookie Luke Schoonmaker to make an impact at the position in 2023.
Dallas Cowboys linked to O.J. Howard
One NFL writer has linked the Cowboys to a player who could help add depth at tight end this season. According to Kristopher Knox with Bleacher Report, the Cowboys’ offense would be improved by signing former first-round pick and Super Bowl champion tight end O.J. Howard:
“Tight end O.J. Howard was released by the Las Vegas Raiders at the beginning of August but remains available. A 2017 first-round pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Howard never quite developed into the consistent playmaker Tampa wanted.
However, he has had some solid seasons as a pass-catcher and can still contribute to an offense. He caught 10 passes for 145 yards and two touchdowns with the Houston Texans last season.
While the 28-year-old isn’t likely to dramatically impact his next offense, he can provide another experienced target and some dependable depth at the tight end position…
The Dallas Cowboys should give Howard a look, as they have a largely inexperienced tight end room, headlined by second-year player Jake Ferguson and rookie Luke Schoonmaker.
The Cowboys are looking to win now. A veteran like Howard, a 2021 Super Bowl champion, can help show their younger players how to get it done.”
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers drafted O.J. Howard in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft. He was with the Buccaneers when they won Super Bowl LV. Howard would be a good veteran fit for the Cowboys, who currently have inexperienced tight ends playing this season.
While he might not be the most exciting player at tight end this year, Howard can be a weapon in key moments for Prescott and the Cowboys offense.
