Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones can always be counted on to speak his mind. After the team traded for former third overall pick Trey Lance, many questioned whether this was a move to replace often-criticized quarterback Dak Prescott. In an interview after the trade, Jones made his plans for Lance clear.
Dallas Cowboys Jerry Jones On Trey Lance Trade
He was asked how Lance can help the team in 2023 as they try to make a Super Bowl run.
“Candidly, I don’t want to plan on, count on or wish for help from him this year,” Jones told reporters, via Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News.
Looks like we will not be seeing a lot of Lance on the field this season. This makes sense. Lance does not know the playbook or the offense. The best thing that he can do right now is learn the offense and work on improving every day at practice. If he was called upon, it would be because of a major injury. This is how Prescott’s career started so it isn’t out of the question.
Great Move By The Cowboys
The Lance trade is a great move for the team. A fourth-round pick is very low-risk. Any time day three picks are traded, I personally don’t mind. Dallas is hoping that if they get Lance in the building and give him a full season plus an offseason, he can improve drastically. If the Cowboys can turn Lance into a franchise quarterback, it would be a massive boost to the roster. If Lance isn’t cut out for the NFL, the Cowboys only gave up a fourth-round pick. Juxtaposed with what the 49ers gave up, this looks like nothing.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is hoping that this move will pay dividends in the future. This year’s roster is set and ready to make a run. Can they finally break the championship drought?
