The Dallas Cowboys may have just scored a massive steal in their recent deal with the San Francisco 49ers. This is after the Cowboys sent a 2024 fourth-round pick to the Niners in exchange for former No. 3 overall selection Trey Lance after the young quarterback fell in the pecking order in San Francisco.
Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy has now spoken out about the deal, and it is clear that the veteran coach is very much looking forward to working with his new QB.
Mike McCarthy’s Role in Trey Lance Trade With 49ers
When asked about his involvement level in the trade, McCarthy was brutally honest in his response. The 59-year-old revealed that ultimately, the final decision came from owner Jerry Jones and his son, Stephen, who also happens to be the team’s executive vice president and CEO:
“I was involved in the evaluation, but the actual business component of it, I am not involved in it,” McCarthy said (h/t Charean Williams of PFT) . “Those decisions come down to Jerry and Stephen [Jones].”
It’s not as if McCarthy was completely taken out of the picture during the trade negotiations with the 49ers. As he said, he was still part of the evaluation process, which means that he likely gave this trade his seal of approval. After all, considering what the Cowboys had to give up for such a high-upside young player like Trey Lance, it’s not as if McCarthy would have blocked the deal.
Mike McCarthy Speaks Out on Plan for Trey Lance
Trey Lance is expected to be Dak Prescott’s primary backup in Dallas. The former North Dakota State standout, however, will likely have some stiff competition from Cooper Rush, who was relatively impressive as the team’s QB1 last season.
At this point, though, it’s too early for McCarthy to make such a significant decision. After all, he has barely had the time to work with the team’s new quarterback:
“Just trying to get time with him,” McCarthy said, via Clarence Hill of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “There’s a lot going on today, tomorrow as far as personnel meetings and game planning for the Giants, so it’s pretty hectic up here but he’s been here all day.”
“… You just do the best we can. We have young player meetings for all our young players, three times a week. We do things in the post practice segments to work with our young players. He’ll be a big part of that and then any other time that’s available.”
In spite of their lack of time together, however, McCarthy is well aware of what the Cowboys have in Trey Lance:
“His athletic definitely something that jumped off,” McCarthy said. “I thought he was a young intriguing prospect.”
While his time with the 49ers may have not worked out as planned, there’s no denying that Trey Lance is still an intriguing young prospect. This is exactly why the Cowboys traded for him.
