The Dallas Cowboys sent shockwaves across the league on Friday after their successful coup on now-ex-San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance. The Cowboys pounced on Lance’s recent fall in San Francisco by scooping up the former No. 3 overall pick in exchange for a 2024 fourth-round pick.
Dak Prescott Reacts to Cowboys’ Trey Lance Trade
Trey Lance will now come in to fight for his place as the QB2 in Dallas behind Dak Prescott. He will be facing stiff competition from Cooper Rush, who himself was a revelation for the Cowboys last season. However, given Prescott’s injury history, Lance should get his chance in Dallas this year.
For his part, Prescott believes that Trey Lance can bring a lot to the table for the Cowboys. The former North Dakota State standout’s NFL career has been anything but stellar thus far, but the fresh start in Dallas could just be what Lance needs right now.
“I mean obviously understand it’s a business,” Prescott said, via Todd Archer of ESPN. “That’s a first-round talent and you’re always trying to make your team better. But that was the front office, so we’re going to welcome him as we do any teammate and hopefully he just makes us better. We’re going to continue to get back at it and know that we’ve got one goal as a team.”
Dak Prescott Bummed to See Will Grier Go
Prescott also revealed that Jerry Jones and the Cowboys front office did not give him a heads-up before they green-lighted the Trey Lance trade. Prescott isn’t sweating it, though:
“I can’t say that I necessarily expected [a heads-up], no,” Prescott said. “I understand though that that’s business. I understand that they’re probably on a timeline, they need to get something done. He felt like that strengthened this team and, yeah, ready to welcome [Lance] and, yeah, I mean knowing the strength of the quarterback room that we have. Honestly right now, my heart and my mind is with Will. So it’s a tough situation, honestly. Love that guy to death over there. Plays his ass off, comes in, prepares the right way each and every day.”
Prescott is currently more invested in Will Grier’s situation in Dallas, which came to an end after news broke that Lance is now on his way in. The new QB’s arrival means that Grier will be shown the door in the coming days, thereby putting an end to his one-year stint in Dallas.
Prescott, of all people, knows, however, that the NFL can be a nasty business. He’s bummed to see Grier go, but at the end of the day, the two-time Pro Bowl quarterback is no longer shocked by these abrupt developments:
“You’ve been in this league eight years, been on this team,” Prescott said, “it’s hard to say that I was surprised to be honest with you.”
