After the Indianapolis Colts decided to use their No. 4 overall pick on him in the 2023 NFL Draft, there’s no denying that there are some major expectations on quarterback Anthony Richardson heading into Year 1. He’s been touted as the future cornerstone QB in Indianapolis, which is without a doubt one of the most demanding jobs in all of professional sports.
Anthony Richardson Is Used to the Pressure
At this point in his career, however, Richardson has already learned to live with the massive expectations. He’s been a superstar all his life, dating from his days in Gainsville Eastside High School to his tenure with the University of Florida.
“People were always saying I was the face of the school, and I was the Gainesville kid,’’ Anthony Richardson said, via Mike Chappell of Fox 59. “There was a lot of pressure, not only from in Gainesville, but just from Gator fans in general.
“They always want the best. Wearing 15, being the quarterback and then growing up in Gainesville, everybody expects so much from you.’’
In case you were wondering, Tim Tebow wore the No. 15 jersey for Florida during his decorated time with the Gators, so you just know that Richardson is not the type to shy away from the pressure.
Be that as it may, there is simply nothing like the bright lights of the NFL. Richardson’s journey has prepared him well for life in the big leagues, but at the same time, even the 21-year-old himself will likely admit that it just hits different.
Richardson is well aware of the fact that he’s going to be Indianapolis’ cornerstone superstar for the years to come, but he’s just not letting this get in his head:
“I know (the Colts) invested a lot in me,’’ Richardson said, “but I’m not the only person on this team. They invested a lot into the other players. They invested a lot into this staff.
“I know they’re going to ride with me, and I’m going to ride with them. I don’t really see it as I’m the main guy because, without the other pieces on the team, team not going to work.’
“… People always talk about how I’m the franchise,’’ he said. “I see it that way, but (teammates) are here before I was here. They’re part of the franchise as well.’’
Anthony Richardson isn’t only not shying away from the pressure; he’s embracing it. So much so, that the young quarterback is already talking about winning a championship in Year 1:
“Everybody wants me to come here and win a Super Bowl my first year,’’ Richardson said. “I wish I could, and I hope I can.
“But sometimes, you’ve got to understand it’s not all about me. (I’m) making sure everybody on this team is involved and everybody is doing their job because I’m not the only one here.’’
This is exactly what Indianapolis Colts fans want to hear from their future cornerstone QB.
