The Denver Broncos have ended their search for a kicker following their decision to cut ties with Brandon McManus this summer. This is after the Broncos agreed to a trade deal with the New Orleans Saints for veteran kicker Wil Lutz, who is now set to reunite with Sean Payton in Denver.
REPORT: Saints Trade K Wil Lutz to Broncos
Sean Payton decided to come out of retirement after agreeing to be the Broncos’ new head coach this summer. This follows the Super Bowl-winning shot-caller’s memorable 16-year tenure as the head coach for the Saints.
During his time in New Orleans, Payton got the opportunity to coach more than a few players along the way. One that has clearly left an impression on him is Pro Bowl kicker Wil Lutz. The Broncos have now reunited Lutz with his former coach via a trade deal with the Saints.
This report comes via league insider Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network:
“Reunion: The #Broncos are trading for #Saints K Wil Lutz, source said. Back with Sean Payton,” Rapoport wrote in his tweet.
Lutz became surplus to requirement in New Orleans amid the emergence of rookie Blake Grupe, who did enough in the preseason to earn the Saints’ kicker spot for 2023. Payton and the Broncos pounced on the situation with Lutz now in line to be Denver’s kicker for the new campaign.
Denver had a lot of questions surrounding the kicker position after releasing Brandon McManus in the offseason. They signed Brett Maher and Elliott Fry, but neither of them did enough. Well, Wil Lutz may have just provided the answer to all their questions.
