The San Francisco 49ers, who made their first Super Bowl appearance with quarterback Brock Purdy under center were not able to finish the job. Losing to the Kansas City Chiefs on the last play of overtime with a score of 25-22.
Purdy threw for 255 yards, 1 touchdown and zero interceptions in his first ever Super Bowl, but his play was not enough to defeat 3-time champion Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs. Kansas City has now won two Super Bowls in a row and will have an opportunity to “three-peat” next season.
NFL Hall Of Famer Shannon Sharpe on 49ers QB Brock Purdy “I Got More Questions”
After the loss, NFL Hall of Famer Shannon Sharpe still had questions regarding Purdy and his abilities on the field when asked on ESPN’s “First Take” with Stephen A. Smith.
“I got more questions… We had the team to win the Super Bowl! You had a ten-point lead. Three of twelve on third down, twenty-five percent… I said (Dan Orlovsky), if he doesn’t win this game, there will still be more questions about Brock Purdy. And with that team, no excuses. You had Deebo, you had Aiyuk, you had (Christian McCaffrey), you had Trent Williams. You had everything that you needed.”
Purdy, who just finished his second season after being drafted last overall in the 2022 draft has taken slack in the media for being surrounded by All-Pro talent, even being labeled a “game manager” and Sharpe is an advocate of that take.
This was started by former MVP Cam Newton, who felt there was a difference between game managers and game changers when it comes to the quarterback position. Along with Purdy, Dak Prescott, Jared Goff, Tua Tagovailoa and others were mentioned by Newton in this category. Newton claims that game managers rely on the system and talent surrounding them to push their success instead of making plays to change the game.
Sharpe Believes Purdy is Not a Top Quarterback in the NFL After Super Bowl 58

When debating with Dan Orlovsky about Purdy’s current standing amongst other quarterbacks in the league, Sharpe felt there were plenty of options that would out-perform him if roles were reversed.
I mean, I could rattle off seven or eight names off the top of my head that I would take instead of him. And if I put those guys in that same offense, they would be better than him. That just me.”
Despite the drama surrounding Purdy from critics, he has managed to quarterback San Francisco to the Super Bowl and led the NFL with a 113.0 passer rating in the regular season. The 49ers may have fallen short of the Lombardi trophy under Purdy, but the accomplishments outweigh the doubts and he has earned his spot as San Francisco’s franchise quarterback moving forward.
