It was clear to everyone and their mother that Zach Wilson’s days with the New York Jets are numbered. The former second-overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft failed to make an impact on the team and lost his starting job to Aaron Rodgers during the 2023 offseason.
While he did get opportunities to prove his worth to the organization, his efforts didn’t do enough to convince the Jets front office to give him another shot.
Now that the Jets are looking for a new team who can take over his contract, they’re struggling to find any interested buyers. This only spells trouble for the two parties who are looking for a painless separation.
New York Jets are finding it tough to find a suitable destination for Zach Wilson
Brian Costello of the New York Post reported that the team has been actively looking for a franchise that is interested in Wilson. However, he wrote that they’re facing difficulty in minting a suitable deal:
They thought they could fetch a Day 3 pick for him in this year’s draft, but that looks unlikely now.
The Jets gave his agent permission to find a trade partner shortly after the season ended but there have been no reports or rumors of interest.
There has been plenty of movement in trades and through free agency and there are not many open seats left.
It’s understandable why the New York Jets are finding it tough to find a suitable destination for Wilson. He didn’t have a better season than Justin Fields and Mac Jones, fellow members of the 2021 draft class who found their teams.
Moreover, the fact that Desmond Ridder, Sam Howell, and Kenny Pickett found new teams to call home earlier than Zach Wilson says a lot about how NFL teams assess him right now.
Is Zach Wilson still a viable QB in 2024?
Wilson may find it tough to find a team that is genuinely interested in his services. However, he has built a convincing case for himself to any teams in need of a backup QB.
Through 12 games in 2023, he passed for 2271 yards, eight touchdowns, and seven interceptions. His pass completion percentage of 60.1% is the highest in his career, but his QB rating was still rated at an abysmal 30.6.
With such numbers, it will be tough to sell Wilson to any team looking for a solid backup QB. At this point, might even take a minor miracle to get Wilson a shot with another NFL team.
