The New York Jets have been one of the most active teams in free agency as they have been building their roster centered around quarterback Aaron Rodgers. One major move that has been on the horizon as backup quarterback Zach Wilson has been expected to be moved before the season.
While speaking to reporters at the meeting, New York Jets owner Woody Johnson discussed the options of what the team will do in terms of Zach Wilson. Johnson was blunt with the discussion surrounding the second pick in the 2021 NFL draft.
“If we don’t trade him, we’re gonna keep him.”
Woody Johnson also discussed that it would be better for Wilson to get a clean slate with another team over being the third-string quarterback with the Jets behind Aaron Rodgers and Tyrod Taylor. Pro Football Talk reported that there have been trade offers for Zach Wilson on the table, but nothing has been reported.
What should the New York Jets expect to receive for a trade of Zach Wilson?
The New York Jets have been trying to step up as they are looking to make the postseason for the first time since 2010. However, moving on from Wilson may be more difficult than originally expected. He has a fifth-year option available for $22.4 million in 2025 but is an $11 million cap hit this upcoming season.
Wilson had a struggling 2023 season as he went 221-of-368 (60.1%) for 2,271 yards with eight passing touchdowns and seven interceptions after taking over for Aaron Rodgers going down in Week 1. The Jets have to understand they will have to accept a deal similar to what the New England Patriots received for their former quarterback Mac Jones.
