New York Giants quarterback Tommy DeVito made plenty of history on Monday in their Week 14 showdown with the Green Bay Packers. One insane feat, however, stands out among the plethora of records he set.
DeVito was sensational in the Monday Night Football showdown that saw the Giants edge out the Packers, 24-22. The undrafted rookie quarterback was a model of efficiency, completing 17 of his 21 passes for 158 yards and one touchdown. He didn’t commit any interception, and he was a threat on the ground as well with his 71 yards on 10 carries.
That performance propelled DeVito on uncharted territory. Since QB starts have been tracked in 1950, no player has ever had a game like the one the Giants signal-caller had, per Opta Stats. DeVito is the first starting QB to complete at least 80 percent of his passes, rush for 70 yards or more, commit zero turnovers and avoid being sacked in a single game.
While the Giants’ offense and defense deserve part of the credit for DeVito’s sensational game, there’s no denying that it takes a special kind of talent to achieve that feat. After all, not even those in the conversation for greatest QBs ever accomplished the mark.
Of course it’s only one game and Tommy DeVito still has a lot of work to do before he can be considered among the elites. However, the New York Giants rising star is definitely on the right path.
Tommy DeVito Reaches New York Giants Milestone
Aside from the incredible single-game record Tommy DeVito just set, the rookie QB also recorded some New York Giants milestones along the way.
He is actually the first Giants quarterback since 1970 to win three straight games as a starter while recording 100-plus passer rating and zero interception. The last one to do it was Fran Tarkenton.
Overall in NFL history, DeVito is only the third rookie QB to reach the said mark, with Dak Prescott being the last quarterback to do it when he made his Dallas Cowboys debut in 2016, via CBS Sports.
DeVito has certainly established himself as a folk hero in New York, and considering the way he’s playing, he’s bound to break more records moving forward.
The good news is he has earned the right to be the Giants’ QB1, with head coach Brian Daboll saying as much.
“Earned the right to play today, earned the right to play next week. The kid’s doing a good job,” Daboll said, per Jordan Raanan of ESPN.
The Giants play the New Orleans Saints in Week 15. Let’s see what kind of miracle Tommy Cutlets will pull off the next time he’s out.
