The New York Giants have a lot of questions surrounding the quarterback position entering 2024. Most of this talk is centered around QB Daniel Jones. He will likely be the top option next year due to contractual reasons. However, his future beyond 2024 with the Giants is uncertain due to the potential buyout.
Right now, the Giants hold the sixth overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. With a deep quarterback class, there has certainly been discussion about the Giants drafting a quarterback. One NFL analyst seems to believe Daniel Jones will have some sort of competition in 2024.
Chris Simms Questions GM Joe Schoen’s Commitment to Daniel Jones
This morning, Joe Schoen spoke to the media at the NFL Scouting Combine. He commented on the current situation with QB Daniel Jones. Those comments seemed to hint that the starting quarterback job was Jones’ to lose in 2024.
However, Chris Simms is skeptical that this is the case. Simms notes that Schoen commented on the number of recent injuries Jones has had. This leads Simms to believe that Schoen is at least concerned about Jones’ durability.
“Obvious concern about his (Daniel Jones’) durability. Gotta think it means they bring in someone, whether it’s insurance or to compete as the starter.” -Chris Simms
Daniel Jones’ Injuries
Jones dealt with multiple injuries in the 2023 NFL season. First, Jones suffered a neck injury in Week 5 against the Miami Dolphins. Then, about one month later, Jones’ 2023 season came to an end when he suffered a non-contact knee injury. On top of this, Jones had a cervical spine injury in 2021.
The point is that Jones’ history in the NFL is not in his favor. As a result, it would be fair for GM Joe Schoen to believe that the Giants need a little insurance at the quarterback position.
New York Giants Moving Forward
All of this does not necessarily spell doom for Daniel Jones. However, it does force the Giants to answer some tough questions. The quarterback class could make it tempting for the Giants to take advantage of that resource.
One thing is for certain. The 2024 NFL season is going to be a crucial one for Jones. If he has another poor season or suffers another significant injury, do not be surprised if that is the end of Jones being a starting quarterback in the NFL.
