The New York Giants have a few big decisions to make this offseason. They already made one, deciding not to use the franchise tag on running back Saquon Barkley (as of right now). This, of course, means that the Giants are going to be in the market for a running back (or two) in the 2024 NFL Draft and free agency.
Replacing Barkley at running back is not the biggest question for the Giants on offense, though. With the sixth overall pick in the NFL Draft, they are in a prime position to get one of the best quarterback prospects. Of course, Caleb Williams and Drake Maye likely will not fall to them with the Chicago Bears and Washington Commanders in dire need of a new quarterback, but they could possibly pick up Jayden Daniels or Michael Penix Jr.
The New York Giants Had a Rough Year at Quarterback in 2023
The Giants got off to a terrible start with Daniel Jones under center in 2023. The former first round pick, who is playing on a four-year $160 million contract, was 1-5 in his starts last season, throwing for 909 yards, two touchdowns, and six interceptions. Of course, his season ended early when he suffered a torn ACL in Week Nine.
Jones was benched at one point for Tyrod Taylor, who threw for 1,341 yards, five touchdowns, and three interceptions in 11 games (five starts). Unfortunately, Taylor missed time with a rib cage injury he suffered in Week Eight.
The remainder of the Giants’ games were started by undrafted free agent Tommy DeVito, who went 3-3 while throwing for 1,101 yards, eight touchdowns, and three interceptions.
Following the season, many wondered if the Giants would use the number six overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft on their next quarterback, despite Jones’ massive contract.
New York Giants General Manager Joe Schoen Has Faith in Daniel Jones
When addressing the media today, New York general manager Joe Schoen was asked about the starting quarterback job. He responded saying that he has complete faith in Daniel Jones, but that his recent injury history is concerning:
“I have faith in Daniel [Jones] as our starting quarterback”

“I have faith in Daniel. I have faith in Daniel as our starting quarterback…. [However] the fact of the matter is, it’s 2 injuries in 3 years.”
In a different interview apart from the general media session, Schoen said:
“We’re gonna continue to surround [Daniel Jones] with the best supporting cast that we can, so he can have success.”
This does not mean that the Giants won’t look for quarterback depth in the 2024 NFL Draft, but it also sounds like the starting job is Jones’ to lose.
