The New York Giants own the sixth overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft and the Minnesota Vikings own the 11th and the 23rd overall selections. Minnesota has been mentioned as possibly trading up with another team in order to draft a quarterback.
The Vikings lost quarterback Kirk Cousins in the offseason to the Atlanta Falcons via free agency. Sam Darnold plans on being Minnesota’s starting quarterback for next season but they are looking for someone in the long-term. It is possible that the Giants may not want J.J. McCarthy.
There is no doubt that the Chicago Bears, the Washington Commanders, and the New England Patriots will draft a quarterback with the first three selections in this draft class. It feels as if Chicago will take Celab Williams, Washington will most likely take Jayden Daniels, and New England will take either Drake Maye or J.J. McCarthy.
If New England takes Maye instead of McCarthy, there is no doubt Minnesota would trade up, but what if it is the other way around? That would be interesting to see if the Vikings would like him as McCarthy. There is a belief that the Giants do like Maye.
The New York Giants Would Trade With the Minnesota Vikings If Drake Maye Is Off the Board
The Giants would trade with the Vikings if Drake Maye was off the board rather than J.J. McCarthy. If McCarthy is still available at six, it would feel like a reach for the Giants and they would either take a wide receiver or trade down with the Vikings.
Minnesota could very well trade both first-round picks this year and an extra second-round pick next season for that sixth pick. That is two extra picks that the Giants would gain from the Vikings. With the 11th selection, it is possible that wide receiver Rome Odunze would still be on the board or they can draft tight end Brock Bowers from Georgia.
With the 23rd selection, they can select a player on the defensive side of the football. The Giants do need some more help in the secondary, especially at cornerback. A couple of cornerbacks that could be available to them with that selection can very well be Kool-Aid McKinstry from Alabama or Ennis Rakestraw Jr. from Missouri.
There will also be some safeties available to them. Also, what if quarterback Michael Penix Jr. from Washington was still available at 23? Would the Giants draft a quarterback then or would they decide not to do it? There are a lot of scenarios that general manager Joe Schoen has to figure out between now and the end of the month.
