The New York Giants and Seattle Seahawks both made very interesting quarterback acquisitions. New York signed former Seahawks QB Drew Lock and Seattle traded for former Washington Commanders QB Sam Howell. Apparently, these two moves were intertwined. Read below to find out more.
New York Giants Set the Stage
The Giants struck first by acquiring Drew Lock. However, Seattle did not let Lock walk without a fight. An interview with Seahawks GM John Schneider revealed that Seattle was interested in re-signing Lock as their backup quarterback.
However, the Giants caused a roadblock here. They reportedly told Lock that he would have an opportunity to be the starting quarterback for the team in 2024. It was something that Lock was not likely to get in Seattle, with Geno Smith being the solidified starting quarterback. As a result, he left Seattle and signed with New York.
Seattle Seahawks Trade for Sam Howell
Lock’s departure left Seattle needing a backup quarterback. Considering Lock had to step up for multiple games in 2023 when Smith went down, Seattle knew they needed some good insurance. This is where Sam Howell comes into play.
He had over 4,000 passing yards during the 2023 NFL season. This was despite the Commanders having one of the worst offensive lines in the NFL. As a result, Seattle will trust Howell to provide the quarterback insurance that they desire.
New York Giants Quarterback Carousel
Drew Lock puts an interesting wrench in this quarterback carousel. Right now, the expected quarterbacks to be on the 2024 roster include Lock, Daniel Jones, and Tommy Devito. If Schneider’s interview is accurate, it appears that the starting quarterback job is wide open next year.
Does this mean that Lock will end up being the starting quarterback? Not necessarily. The bigger take from this should be that the Giants are likely not all-in with Daniel Jones despite Giants GM Joe Schoen stating otherwise. Plus, Tommy Devito does not appear to have won over Schoen despite gaining fame off of the field.
All of this does not dismiss the possibility of the Giants drafting yet another quarterback to bring into this carousel. Reports reveal that the Giants are strongly inquiring about trading into a top three draft position. However, given that each of the top three teams likely needs a quarterback, New York should not count on this happening. Still, the quarterback class is so deep that the Giants may draft one regardless.
