The Washington Commanders grabbed headlines earlier today with their latest announcement. The announcement was that Washington was going to trade QB Sam Howell to the Seattle Seahawks. So, what does this mean for the Commanders? It means we have a lot better idea of who they are going to draft. Read below to find out more.
Washington Commanders Likely Drafting Quarterback With #2 Pick
With Sam Howell gone, it frees up the starting quarterback job. While the Washington Commanders did sign Marcus Mariota, it does not close the discussion regarding the starting quarterback. This is especially the case with the Commanders holding the second overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.
So, what does this mean? It means you should expect the Commanders to draft a quarterback with that pick. Luckily, for the Commanders, there are plenty of quarterbacks available in this year’s draft.
Notable Quarterback Prospects
There are about 5-6 notable quarterbacks available in this year’s draft. Two of them just played in the national championship. Those would be J.J. McCarthy from Michigan and Michael Penix Jr. from Washington respectively.
Of the quarterbacks available, most eyes have been on Caleb Williams. He is expected to be the first quarterback taken in this year’s draft. Unfortunately, for Washington, the Chicago Bears are picking ahead of them, and they are likely going to take a quarterback. All signs point to the Bears taking Williams.
The most interesting debate here rests between two quarterbacks. These two quarterbacks are Drake Maye from North Carolina and Jayden Daniels from LSU respectively. The latter quarterback won the Heisman Trophy this past season.
Drake Maye vs. Jayden Daniels
Why is this an interesting debate? Because most mock drafts have one of these two quarterbacks as the second quarterback drafted. Let’s take a closer look at what these two quarterbacks did this past season.
Maye had 3,608 passing yards, 24 touchdown passes, and nine rushing touchdowns. How did Daniels do in comparison?
Daniels had 3,812 passing yards. Remarkably, he had 40 touchdown passes and just four interceptions. Plus, Daniels had an additional 10 rushing touchdowns.
So, which one of these quarterbacks will be drafted first? We will have to wait and see. However, after the latest Washington Commanders trade, one of these quarterbacks will almost certainly be a future Commander. Washington would hope the quarterback starts for more than one season in this scenario.
