The New York Giants are facing an identity crisis heading into the 2024 NFL season. Now, they have the #6 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft to try to address this. It is no secret that this team is facing a lot of issues. However, one former NFL GM believes that there is a realistic trade the Giants can make for the #1 overall draft pick.
Mike Tannenbaum Proposes NFL Draft Trade
During ESPN’s Get Up morning show, former NFL GM Mike Tannenbaum proposed a draft trade between the New York Giants and the Chicago Bears. Right now, the Bears hold the #1 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. The Giants have the sixth overall pick.
So, what does Tannenbaum have the Giants giving up in said trade? Truthfully, it looks like a king’s ransom. Tannenbaum says the Giants should give up their sixth overall pick, a 2024 second round pick, a 2025 first round pick, a 2025 second round pick, plus defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux.
Mimicking Last Year’s Draft Trade
If the Bears were to accept a trade like this, it would not be the first time. Last year, they also held the #1 overall pick for a brief period. However, Chicago ended up trading that top draft pick to the Carolina Panthers.
The twist was it ended up costing the Carolina Panthers a lot of capital. On top of this, they ended up selecting QB Bryce Young rather than QB C.J. Stroud. Here is what the Panthers gave to the Bears in exchange for that draft pick:
- 2023 ninth overall pick
- 2023 second round pick
- 2024 first round pick
- 2025 second round pick
- WR D.J. Moore
As you can see, the pieces that the Panthers gave up last year are similar to what Tannenbaum is proposing that the Giants give up this year. Both would give the Bears a top 10 pick in the draft along with several other picks and a veteran player.
New York Giants Moving Forward
So, should the New York Giants make this trade? Three big factors come into play here. The first is how much the Giants believe in Caleb Williams. Right now, he is projected to be the top quarterback selected in this year’s draft.
The craziest aspect of this trade proposal is Kayvon Thibodeaux. He is coming off a season where he showed remarkable progression and he is still on his rookie contract. Understandably, the Giants are likely going to have to offer a veteran player of some sort. However, it should be someone less crucial to the success of their franchise.
Finally, the Giants have to consider is their current quarterback situation. Tommy DeVito had a notable rookie season and more importantly, Daniel Jones is expected to make about $40 million next season. Plus, he is returning from multiple injuries.
However, the future at the quarterback position is far from certain. The Giants can easily move on from both of their current quarterbacks after the 2024 NFL season. So, if they believe neither of their quarterbacks can get them to where they want to be, this hypothetical trade may be something that the Giants consider.
