“I’m in the middle. It could go either direction,” Waller said. “It’s just putting everything down and being like, ‘What are the real pros and cons of going on this journey again, and what do I really want out of it?’ I don’t feel like I’ve arrived at the point where it’s like the concrete answer that I can be like, ‘All right, that’s my truth.'” According to NFL.com.

New York Giants Tight End
Darren Waller joined the New York Giants before the 2023 season. Waller was acquired from the Raiders last March in a trade for a third-round pick; Waller looked like a game-changing playmaker during training camp. Lingering hamstring injuries surfaced before the season started.
Darren played in 12 total games. He made a difference on the field, having 52 receptions for 552 yards. His injuries and quarterback play led to an unproductive offensive season for the New York Giants.
Darren Waller Breakout Years
Darren started his career for the Baltimore Ravens but only appeared over a couple of seasons. He broke out onto the scene for the Oakland and Las Vegas Raiders. Waller had 197 catches, 2,341 yards, and 12 touchdowns during the 2019-2020 seasons.
It became public that some of Waller’s issues were not directly tied to on-field activity. During his break-out seasons, he spoke up about his problems with substance abuse. He went on HBO’s Real Talk to discuss back in 2022.

Before becoming the breakout star he is today, Waller battled through drug addiction since the age of 15.
From high school to college at Georgia Tech, and early in his NFL career, he was sliding further into his substance abuse.
“Drinking four to five times a week, at least. Molly sometimes, Xanax, Adderall here and there, literally for me, it was like I really didn’t care, anything that can change the way that I feel, anything that can give me that effect, I was pretty much down to try it,” said Waller during his interview with HBO’s correspondent David Scott.

Injuries have derailed Waller, but he says that is not the only reason for his contemplation of retirement.
“That’s part of the equation,” Waller said of his injury history. But that’s not the driving force behind making the decision. It isn’t just frustration from a health standpoint. It’s a lot deeper than that,” according according to The Athletic.
