The New York Giants are one of the teams that have been stuck in what one could describe as football purgatory. It has been 13 long years since they’ve tasted Super Bowl glory, and while this team has remained somewhat competitive, it just doesn’t feel like they have what it takes to bring the Lombardi trophy back to New York in the immediate future.
According to NFL analyst Brad Gagnon of Bleacher Report, this all boils down to quarterback Daniel Jones.
Should the New York Giants Move on From Daniel Jones?
Jones is entering his sixth year with the Giants — his second full season since putting pen to paper on a massive $160 million, four-year extension. New York remains committed to its cornerstone quarterback, which according to Gagnon, is a notion that the organization should seriously consider turning away from:
“The Giants admit—just a year-and-a-half after giving him a huge new contract—that quarterback Daniel Jones isn’t the answer. And if that’s the case, the team likely knows it has to gain more draft capital to land that next franchise QB,” Gagnon wrote.
Is it time to pull the plug on Jones? The Giants won’t do it before Week 1, but things could change dramatically if they get off to another slow start.
Gagnon then points out that the dilemma here for the Giants is that they have enough talent around Jones to make them competitive. The arrival of the likes of Malik Nabers and Brian Burns in the offseason, as well as having Dexter Lawrence and Andrew Thomas, among others, as part of their core only means that New York could make some noise this season.
This would, however, be counterproductive to their cause if they eventually decide to move on from Jones in favor of a new QB1 via the 2025 NFL Draft:
“The Giants might accidentally compete, even if Jones continues to be ineffective.
“That could force the organization to tank down the stretch, the first chapter of which would come with a trade involving a veteran like Darius Slayton or Bobby Okereke as well as future draft capital in return for a potential top-five pick,” Gagnon suggested.
It goes without saying that it’s going to be a very interesting season for the Giants in 2024.
