The New York Giants didn’t have a great 2023 season despite being surprise playoff darlings the year prior. They struggled to find their form and saw their season end with a disappointing 6-11 record.
While multiple people are eager to see the kind of changes Joe Schoen will bring to the team, there are certain positions that many Giants fans are still uncertain on.
One of these areas is at tight end. With Darren Waller mulling retirement after the team’s disappointing season, both the team and its fanbase held their breath to wait on his decision.
Darren Waller decides to play one more year with the New York Giants
Anthony Rivardo of Empire Sports Media published a piece that talked about Waller’s potential retirement after a disappointing season that saw him perform far below the usual standard that fans have expected out of him.
After the 2023 season finished for the Giants, Waller reportedly told people within the New York Giants organization that he was thinking about hanging up his cleats for good. However, the 31-year-old tight end decided to give it one more shot with Big Blue after spending some time thinking about the potential of retirement.
Rivardo quoted two Giants insiders about the news:
Paul Schwartz and Ryan Dunleavy of The New York Post reported on Friday that Waller will return for his second season with the Giants in 2024.
“A Giants source confirmed Friday that Waller will play for the team in 2024,” Schwartz and Dunleavy reported. “He will not be a cap casualty, the Post learned.”
Waller, the Georgia Tech alum who was first drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in 2015, was the second-best receiving option for both Daniel Jones and Tommy DeVito. He made 52 receptions for 552 yards and one touchdown.
While these numbers were a far cry from his peak years with the Raiders, it cannot be denied that he’s still shown himself to be an effective weapon to an NFL team. If the New York Giants manage to pull off an incredible draft-day trade to get one of the top quarterback prospects in this year’s draft, it wouldn’t be strange to see his numbers skyrocket again in 2024.
