The New York Giants have a huge dilemma when it comes to their quarterback situation. Daniel Jones didn’t pan out the way they hoped after giving him a massive contract extension, and Tommy DeVito didn’t manage to turn the team’s disappointing season around after a promising start at MetLife Stadium.
Since they have to deal with such a subpar QB room, it wasn’t surprising to hear the team was involved in the Russell Wilson sweepstakes before he decided to sign with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Russell Wilson attracted the interest of the New York Giants for his cheap wage
The Record Sports’ Art Stapleton broke that the New York Giants were mainly interested in Wilson for the mere fact that he can produce at a reasonably high level while also demanding an extremely affordable paycheck:
The Giants were intrigued by the idea of getting a QB with his resume for $1.21 million. I don’t know if it was ever going beyond the conversation Thursday.
But because of the price, they had to explore the option. And they did. https://t.co/kvNDT0n6Al— Art Stapleton (@art_stapleton) March 11, 2024
The report doesn’t reveal whether the Giants were interested in his services much to offer him a possible contract. However, it’s undeniable that a one-time Super Bowl winner who passed for 3070 yards and 26 touchdowns during a down season is an attractive prospect for GM Joe Schoen.
It also helps that the team wouldn’t have had to pay a king’s ransom for Wilson. If the Giants had gotten WIlspon, they would have been able to rebuild the team to find a possible replacement for Saquon Barkley or rehash their defense.
Who will be the starting QB for the New York Giants?
Now that Wilson is out of the picture, it would be reasonable to think that the team would try to give Daniel Jones at least one more shot under center. His numbers don’t paint an encouraging picture (909 passing yards, two TDs, and six INTs in six games), but the 2024 season could change things for them.
However, many believe that the Giants would probably select another QB in the upcoming draft. Now that many of the best QBs in the upcoming free agent class are now taken up, the Giants can go through the draft and find Jones’ replacement there.
