New York Giants quarterback Tommy DeVito is one of the most polarizing players on the roster. A season ago, he helped the Giants win three games as a starter when Daniel Jones and Tyrod Taylor were sidelined due to injury.
DeVito has not exactly lit it up in the preseason, but he knows the playbook well for this football team. Along with Tommy DeVito, Daniel Jones and Drew Lock are the only other quarterbacks on the New York Giants roster.
Adam Bernstein of gmenhq.com Believes That the New York Giants Can’t Afford To Cut Tommy DeVito
It is going to be an interesting decision between now and 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday whether or not Tommy DeVito will still be on the Giants roster. Adam Bernstein of gmenhq.com believes that the Giants should not cut him at this time. Bernstein said about why New York should not cut him:
“Yes, Jones and Lock will make the roster, but it wouldn’t be a shock if the Giants rostered a third quarterback. Despite Jones’s struggles on the field throughout the preseason, he will be the true starter. Still, his injury history remains a concern, especially after recovering from a torn ACL last year. The Giants are being cautious with Lock right now, but he didn’t look strong in his short amount of time on the field during the preseason.
If there’s anything we learned from last season, the more depth at quarterback, the better. Jones was one of seven starting quarterbacks to suffer a season-ending injury last year. While DeVito was the third-string quarterback, he still had the opportunity to play with Taylor sidelined last year with injuries. Tommy Cutlets is a great candidate to fill that role again for Big Blue or even take on the backup role while Lock is still recovering.
It’s also worth mentioning that DeVito played well last year with a weaker offensive line. We can expect an even better season from him this year with an improved offensive line consisting of new additions like Jermaine Elumenor, Jon Runyan Jr., and Greg Van Roten.
He may not have had the most impressive stats in the Giants’ preseason finale against the Jets and was sacked eight times; he was also playing behind the second and third-team offensive line and was throwing to wide receivers who won’t make the team. You can’t fault DeVito for what happened in the preseason finale loss to the Jets. With so much uncertainty at the position, cutting him and risking losing him to waivers to be a massive mistake. Brian Daboll needs to keep him around.”
It would be interesting to see what DeVito would do with Malik Nabers, Jalin Hyatt, and Wan’Dale Robinson as the receiving options this season and it doesn’t include Darius Slayton. Daniel Bellinger and Theo Johnson will be the starting tight ends and keep an eye on the improved offensive line as well.
Tommy DeVito trying to find Malik Nabers in the passing game would be an interesting connection. He just will throw it down the field.
Fans Don’t Want DeVito On the 53-Man Roster
Some fans don’t want him to make the 53-man roster. Some still have not forgiven him for winning games last season because they missed out on quarterbacks like Jayden Daniels, Drake Maye, and Caleb Williams. The New York Giants are stuck with Daniel Jones for this season. This is what some fans had to say on Twitter about DeVito:
I don’t give a single fuck if Tommy Devito is on this roster as QB3 or not.

There are really people out there that thought Tommy Devito was the future in East Rutherford. Lol

The #Giants QB room does not look good, and I wouldn’t mind if they moved on from Tommy DeVito at all.
Bringing in Dorian Thompson-Robinson would make so much sense to develop what could be a long-term backup and maybe an eventual starter on a budget 👀 pic.twitter.com/YKk4kuEaIP

If the New York Giants were to cut Tommy DeVito from the roster, it would be interesting to see who they would sign as the third quarterback. Daniel Jones and Drew Lock both can’t be trusted and it would be total roster malpractice by general manager Joe Schoen to only keep two quarterbacks on the roster currently.
