The New Orleans Saints are working to clear cap space
The New Orleans Saints came into the offseason armed with pen, paper, and calculators. The Saints needed to prioritize math skills in the front office over football knowledge, as the Saints started the offseason period around $60 million or so over. They’re at about half that now after working on some contracts.

According to Tom Pelissero with the NFL Network, the Saints recently restructured veteran safety Tyrann Mathieu’s contract for next season. The move gave the Saints nearly $4.7 million in wiggle room this offseason.

But there is still more work to be done for an NFL team that is hoping to land one of the top quarterbacks in free agency this offseason, Derek Carr. According to Over The Cap, as of Friday morning, the Saints are still about $31 million over for 2023.

They still have time to make more cuts and restructures this offseason. The Saints have proven so far this offseason that they can get creative with the cap. We’ll see if that can help them land a top free-agent prize.
