New Orleans Saints pending free agent Jameis Winston is not yet ready to surrender his dreams of becoming a QB1 again, and he knows that’s unlikely to happen in 2024 with the Saints, who still have Derek Carr atop the quarterback pecking order. It’s looking like the former Heisman Trophy winner and No. 1 overall pick at the 2015 NFL Draft is on his way to the waters of NFL free agency.
New Orleans Saints head coach Dennis Allen recently shared his thoughts on Winston and the QB’s outlook on the team, though, he did not provide any concrete insight on the team’s plans on Winston as the free agency clock continues to tick.
Yeah, I think James is still under contract as we sit here right now. And there’s a lot of things that happened throughout the off season program. We’ll see how those things play out. But as we said, and look, I know Jamis has said, I want to go and be a starter. And obviously, that’s something that he aspires to do. And we’ll see how things play out.

Will Jameis Winston Stay With The New Orleans Saints?
It is understandable for Winston to want a starter role again. It is just unlikely to happen with the Saints, especially since they signed Derek Carr to a four-year $150 million deal in 2023 that comes with a cap hit of $12.668 million in 2024 and $51.458 million in 2025. The dead cap would be enormous for the Saints if they suddenly decide to let go of Carr and choose to go with Winston, which would be a head-scratching predicament on top of another confusing decision.
Nevertheless, the door is still open for Winston to run it back with the Saints.
