A New Orleans Saints quarterback who is set to hit free agency in a few weeks recently described what they want out of the team they play for in 2020. The Saints recently restructured Derek Carr’s contract. The Saints traded for him last season, so Carr likely isn’t going anywhere this offseason.
Carr’s backup, Jamis Winston, will test the open market if the Saints do not extend him before the league’s new year starts. It’ll take more than money to convince Winston to stay with New Orleans.
Jameis Winston wants to play for a Super Bowl contender
Per Sports Illustrated‘s Kyle Mosely’s transcription of Winston’s comments, the number one overall pick in 2015 said he wants to be the starting quarterback on a Super Bowl-winning team:
“Well, what next with me is wherever God, and whatever he has in his will for me. I’m going to do my best to dominate the opportunity,” Jameis told Saints News Network. “It’s such a love for the city. I just admire the individuals. And I admire the culture and the integrity that this city possesses…
“However, my goal is to be, and my desire is to be, a Super Bowl-winning starting quarterback in this league. Right now, that doesn’t look like a very clear picture with the New Orleans Saints.”
The New Orleans Saints probably won’t start Winston again
Winston was originally brought to New Orleans to be Drew Brees’ backup. Following Brees’ retirement, injuries plagued Winston’s seasons in 2021 and 2022 before the Saints made Carr the full-time starter.
One can’t blame Winston for wanting to be the starting quarterback on a Super Bowl team. But that doesn’t seem realistic for Winston at this point.
Still, Winston might have a better chance to get on the field with another team in free agency. And that means the Saints must prepare to find a QB2 this offseason.
