The New Orleans Saints have embarked on their annual tradition of shedding salary in order to get under the salary cap threshold by the start of the new league year. As has been the case over the last few seasons, they entered this offseason with the least amount salary cap space in the NFL, needing to shed approximately $80 million to get under the cap.
Fortunately for the Saints, and the rest of the NFL, the league increased the 2024 salary cap by $30 million. This meant that New Orleans saved about $10 million in contracts they need to either cut or restructure. Early Thursday morning, ESPN’s Adam Schefter announced another small step the Saints have taken to get closer to getting under the cap.
The New Orleans Saints Restructure the Cameron Jordan Contract
Schefter posted the following Saints’ salary cap update on X (formerly Twitter):
Eight-time Pro-Bowl DE Cameron Jordan became the latest New Orleans player to restructure his contract, signing a deal to free up another $1.5 million against the Saints salary cap.

Restructuring Jordan’s contract was a no-brainer for New Orleans. He has the second-highest cap hit on the team, only behind offensive lineman Ryan Ramczyk. Had the Saints cut Jordan, they would have added $13 million to their 2024 salary cap as he carries a $36.6 million dead cap hit compared to a $23.2 cap hit.
Next season, however, the Saints will be able to save $4 million but cutting Jordan. That being said, Jordan will count towards New Orleans’ salary cap until at least 2027 (barring any changes) due to previously added void years.
Could This Be Cameron Jordan’s Last Season with the New Orleans Saints?
There is no doubt that Cameron Jordan is one of the best defensive players in Saints history, if not the best. In his entire 13-year career, he has missed just one game and has started 208 of the 209 games that he played.
Jordan is an eight-time Pro Bowl selection, one-time First Team All-Pro, and two-time Second Team All-Pro. He came in fourth in Defensive Player of the Year voting in 2017.
Jordan also is the Saints’ all-time sack leader with 117.5 career sacks. However, he is coming off one of the worst season of his career in 2023. While playing in and starting all 17 games, Jordan recorded just 2.0 sacks and 43 total tackles. Those were his lowest totals in those categories since his rookie season in 2011.
From 2012-2022, Jordan never had fewer than 7.5 sacks in a season, reaching double-digit sack totals six times, highlighted by a career-high 15.5 in 2019.
