With the New England Patriots entering the post-Bill Belichick era, a lot of changes are expected to happen. For one, it doesn’t look like quarterback Mac Jones is going to stay, with the team deciding to not pick the fifth-year option on the young QB.
Armed with the third overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, the Patriots are largely expected to draft a quarterback with their pick. But should they decide to look at the trade market for a potential ready-made solution for their QB woes, Justin Fields could be an interesting choice.
Chicago Bears QB Justin Fields a Top Trade Target for New England Patriots
The Bleacher Report scouting department named Fields as a top trade target for the Patriots along with Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver Mike Williams and Denver Broncos wideout Jerry Jeudy. Emphasizing the team’s need for a quarterback, the report mentioned the Chicago Bears signal-caller as a good fit for the team both talent and age-wise.
Here’s what BR has to say about the trade suggestion:
The Patriots really need to find a quarterback who can replace the combination of Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe. If they aren’t comfortable with Jayden Daniels, that probably means looking at free agency (Kirk Cousins) or getting one with a trade. Justin Fields is an obvious match as a young (he’ll be 25 next season) quarterback who wasn’t in the most stable environment in Chicago.
Finding a No. 1 receiver should be an offseason goal as well. Targeting Mike Williams would make some sense. He is recovering from an ACL tear that he suffered last season, but he has two 1,000-yard seasons on his resume and would probably be the best true outside receiver they’ve had in years.
With the Bears picking no. 1 overall in the 2024 NFL Draft and largely expected to take USC Trojans star Caleb Williams, it only makes sense for them to move on from Fields.
Fields has one year left on his $18.8 million rookie contract with the team.
Why Should the New England Patriots Pursue Justin Fields?
Should the Chicago Bears really move on from Justin Fields, there’s merit for the New England Patriots to pick up the phone and explore trade opportunities for him.
They need a quarterback, and Fields himself could use a fresh start in a new situation where there is a well-established system and culture of excellence.
Even with Belihick gone, the Patriots remain a reputable organization that is willing to do whatever it takes to win. Fields can certainly benefit from that.
Fields has also established himself as a dual-threat quarterback, and while he didn’t have much success as the QB1 with the Bears, it doesn’t mean the former 11th pick is a bust. Just look how Baker Mayfield has thrived with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
It remains to be seen what the Patriots will actually do with their QB situation, but a Fields trade is definitely something worth looking at.
