USC Trojans star Caleb Williams may be the consensus no. 1 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, but according to a recent report, former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick thinks otherwise.
Apparently, for Belichick, Williams is not the top quarterback in the class. Instead, in the eyes of the veteran tactician, that honor goes to LSU Tigers standout Jayden Daniels.
Ex-New England Patriots Coach Bill Belichick Loves Jayden Daniels
Before his departure from the Patriots, Belichick apparently had Daniels at the top of his draft boards, per Bridget Condon of NFL Network.
Belichick is such a huge fan of Daniels that he was reportedly determined to bring him to New England in any way possible.
“I can tell you, based on conversations that I’ve had with people around the organization, Bill Belichick loved Jayden Daniels. He was the guy on top of their draft board. He was going to do everything in his power to try and get that guy,” Condon shared.
Now, with Belichick gone from the Patriots and Jerod Mayo taking over, it’s unknown if New England’s stance on Daniels remains the same.
For what it’s worth, however, the Patriots have been heavily linked with Daniels. With the no. 3 overall pick in the draft, many see them taking the LSU product or even trading up with the Washington Commanders for the chance to get him.
It remains to be seen what the Patriots will do in the draft, but it’s definitely worth keeping an eye on Daniels as a potential target for them.
Caleb Williams Criticisms Coming
It’s quite shocking that Bill Belichick isn’t that impressed with Caleb Williams despite the fact that he’s the clear-cut no. 1 pick for many, with several experts even saying he’s a top-tier talent.
Nonetheless, it’s worth noting that Belichick isn’t alone in that assessment of Williams. In fact, former NFL running back Merril Hoge is even harsher in his comments about the USC Trojans star, saying that Williams is “not special.”
“He doesn’t function from the pocket like he’s gonna have to in the National Football League. He’s a guy who is 6-1. When you look at a dirty pocket, you look at a clean pocket and you look at the different plays that he gives up where he should be throwing the football but he goes and makes a play by running around, you’re not going to survive in the National Football League like that,” Hoge said of WIlliams recently.
Of course it’s unlikely to deter those teams interested in Williams, but there will surely be plenty of comparisons between him, Jayden Daniels and Drake Maye–the Top 3 quarterbacks in the class–once they step foot onto the pro scene.
