The Minnesota Vikings are at a crossroads when it comes to Kirk Cousins. It’s hard to deny the impact the 35-year-old QB made on the team ever since he joined them in 2018, though circumstances have stopped their partnership from winning a Super Bowl.
However, the Vikings are reportedly unsure whether to give the Michigan State product another contract. Rumors are circulating that they’re unsure whether he’s still the right man for the franchise moving forward, which opens an interesting conversation about his NFL future.
Minnesota Vikings will let Kirk Cousins walk, to draft a new QB
According to BroBible’s Garrett Carr, the Vkings are seriously considering looking for a new quarterback through the draft, as first reported by Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer:
With the team having the 11th pick in the upcoming NFL Draft, they could absolutely make a move for a quarterback. The roster isn’t perfect by any means. But, it’s definitely a situation that would be pretty favorable for a highly-drafted rookie. Plus, they could use the savings on not paying Kirk Cousins and instead having a quarterback on the rookie scale to upgrade the roster at other spots. The running game could certainly use a boost, especially if they are playing a young quarterback.
It’s understandable if the Minnesota Vikings are looking to move on from Cousins. Aside from the fact that they would have to pay him big money to stay, he hasn’t completely turned the team’s fortunes when it comes to winning a Super Bowl. Starting off fresh with a young quarterback is a great move if they’re going with that mentality.
However, it’s also important to note that Kirk Cousins is still a top-tier NFL quarterback. Before he endured a gruesome injury against the Las Vegas Raiders, he was on pace for another solid season. He finished his 2023 campaign with 2331 passing yards, 18 TDs, and 5 INTs. There are teams who could use a man of his talents to take their team to the next level.
Cousins leaving in free agency might actually be the best option for all teams involved: the Vikings get to start fresh with a young QB while Cousins can chase for a Super Bowl with a team that needs a quality QB.
