The Minnesota Vikings and Kirk Cousins, their star quarterback for the past few years, are set to part ways this offseason. The thing is, the team can land a new QB if the stars align for them in the coming months.
After starting 1-4 last season, the Vikings looked like momentum was on their side when the team won five straight games. But after attaining a 6-4 record and heading into Week 8, Cousins tore his Achilles tendon and was ruled out for the remainder of the season.
As a result, the Vikings circled through several quarterbacks for the rest of the season. This led the team to go 1-6 after Cousins got injured after that particular match against the Green Bay Packers. By Week 18, Minnesota was eliminated from playoff contention.
Furthermore, Cousins is now entering free agency, which has led a number of teams to pursue the quarterback. While every front office is scrambling to nab the QB, the Vikings are projected to replace him with a $242.5 million star.
Minnesota Vikings Predicted to Replace Kirk Cousins With Russell Wilson
The Vikings will need a quarterback to replace Cousins in the event he leaves Minnesota. Seth Walder predicts how the team might move forward in his article for ESPN:
“Let’s call this Wilson plus Oregon’s Bo Nix. Cousins might end up back in Minnesota, but I could see the Vikings balking at giving him a multiyear guaranteed contract. If he’s out of the picture, Wilson is probably the next-best short-term solution. (I’m assuming the Bears wouldn’t deal Justin Fields inside their division.)
But don’t be surprised if the Vikings go after multiple players to fill Cousins’ void. If they do, acquiring Wilson and drafting a QB at No. 11 makes the most sense,” Walder said.
This move is projected to maintain continuity if Cousins leaves the team. While the performance may dip next season, this potential decision can temper the impact of Cousins’ departure for next season.
