The Minnesota Vikings are going to look very different than they did in 2023, especially on offense. The reasons for this, of course, is because last season did not go as planned. Coming off of a 13-4 record and NFC North title in 2022, the Kirk Cousins-led Vikings were supposed to dominate the division again, and perhaps even compete for a Super Bowl.
Unfortunately, they missed running back Dalvin Cook more than they could have thought they would. Minnesota had the fourth worst rushing offense in the NFL, averaging just 91.4 rushing yards per game in 2023. Alexander Mattison had 700 rushing yards, but averaged just 3.9 yards per carry. He also did not score a single rushing touchdown last season.
The Minnesota Vikings Have Big Questions on Offense
Of course, the biggest question that the Vikings face on offense is who will be their starting quarterback. Cousins signed a four-year deal with the Atlanta Falcons, leaving them with Joshua Dobbs and Nick Mullens on the roster. Needless to say, the Vikings are in the market for a new starting quarterback, but the market is pretty dry on that front, especially with Russell Wilson signing with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Another big question is who will be their starting running back. Mattison was released following his disappointing season, but Ty Chandler and Cam Akers did not really spark any hope in the run game last year either.
As it turns out, they may be looking to a former rival as their answer in the backfield.
The Minnesota Vikings Are in Heavy Talks with Former Green Bay Packers Running Back Aaron Jones
On Monday, the Green Bay Packers made the shocking decision to release their star running back, Aaron Jones. The decision followed the news that Green Bay had also signed former Las Vegas Raiders running back Josh Jacobs, who was the 2022 NFL rushing leader.
Following the news of Jones’ release, reports leaked that he had a plethora of suitors on the free agent market, and that the one team that is really trying to get a deal done (and soon) is Minnesota:
#Vikings are having constructive dialogue with former #Packers running back Aaron Jones with some optimism that a potential deal could be reached for him to remain in NFC North after being released by Green Bay, per league sources @KPRC2
— Aaron Wilson (@AaronWilson_NFL) March 12, 2024
Jones is ending his tenure with the Packers as the franchise’s third all-time leading rusher. While he was injured for most of 2023, he did finish the season (and postseason) with five consecutive 100+ yard rushing games.
While it would be strange seeing Jones in purple, he does make a lot of sense for the Vikings.
