The Michigan Wolverines have had to overcome a lot of adversity in the 2023-24 college football season. Tonight, they looked to cap that effort off with a national championship. As they always have this year, the Michigan Wolverines put their heads down and took care of business. Now, they are national champions.
Michigan Wolverines Defeat Washington Huskies 34-13
The Michigan Wolverines took command of this game early. They led 17-3 in the second quarter and forced Washington to play desperately early.
There was one point where the Huskies went for it on 4th and 7 near midfield in the second quarter. Unfortunately, QB Michael Penix Jr. and WR Rome Odunze could not connect despite having plenty of open field. That could have been a touchdown or at least extended the drive. Instead, Washington had to give the ball back to Michigan.
The Huskies were only able to score one touchdown in the entire game. Despite getting to within a touchdown in the third quarter, Michigan pulled away with 14 unanswered points after that. The Wolverines showed just how tough their defense is, only allowing just over 300 total yards.
Michigan Wolverines Moving Forward
This is the Wolverines’ first championship since 1997. It is also the first for head coach Jim Harbaugh since he took command of the program in 2015. This is despite the Big Ten suspending Harbaugh for the final three regular season games due to sign-stealing allegations committed by his coaching staff.
It may result in some fans calling this season tainted. For Michigan and their fans, this does not matter. The important thing is that they won and finally got over the hump. Now, Jim Harbaugh will celebrate before deciding what he wants to do next in his career.
