Fresh off a CFP National Championship, the Michigan Wolverines are quickly turning the page onto 2024, with former head coach Jim Harbaugh heading back to the NFL. Harbaugh took the Los Angeles Chargers job late last month, with the Wolverines quickly promoting offensive coordinator Sherrone Moore as his successor. Michigan again plans to promote within to fill their now vacant OC position. Per Matt Zenitz of 247Sports, the Wolverines expect to promote quarterback coach Kirk Campbell to offensive play-caller.
Michigan is expected to name Kirk Campbell as its new offensive coordinator, sources tell @247sports.
Campbell was Michigan’s QB coach in 2023 and helped JJ McCarthy emerge as a potential first-round pick. Was also interim OC for the team’s win over ECU.https://t.co/dJORJ80Uo5 pic.twitter.com/bnWWEChmBj

The Wolverines remained linked to outside candidates, including Utah’s Andy Ludwig. However, Michigan will make another in-house promotion with Campbell.
Kirk Campbell: Returns to Offensive Coordinator
Campbell joined the Michigan Wolverines in 2022 as an offensive analyst. He earned a promotion after one year, becoming the team’s quarterback coach last season. He worked with quarterback J.J. McCarthy, whose draft stock has skyrocketed over the past season. McCarthy could slot into the first few rounds of the upcoming NFL draft. Campbell also had an opportunity to call plays this season with then-offensive coordinator Sherrone Moore suspended to start the year.
Campbell called a brilliant game in his team’s win over East Carolina in the season opener. The Wolverines won 30-3, with quarterback J.J. McCarthy going an uber-efficient 26 of 30 for 280 yards and three touchdowns. Meanwhile, the combo of Donovan Edwards and Blake Corum rushed 22 times for 110 yards and a score. McCarthy set Michigan’s single-game record for completion percentage among those with at least 30 attempts.
Before Michigan, Campbell called plays at Old Dominion from 2020 to 2021. The Monarchs went 6-7 during his final season, scoring 27.6 points per game. Quarterbacks Hayden Wolff and Darriel Mack Jr. combined for 15 touchdowns against 14 picks.
Michigan Wolverines: Retooling for 2024
The Wolverines will lose their starting backfield of J.J. McCarthy and Blake Corum to the NFL draft. New head coach Sherrone Moore could still look at the transfer portal to replace McCarthy. However, most of the top prospects have already committed to different schools. The current options at quarterback are Alex Orji, Jayden Denegal, Davis Warren, and 2024 recruit Jadyn Davis. Denegal went 4-of-5 this season for 50 yards and a touchdown. The former three-star prospect could earn playing time next season. Meanwhile, Warren did not complete any of his five passes this year.
