Miami Dolphins Linked to Trading for Pittsburgh Steelers’ QB as Tua Tagovailoa ‘Stopgap’

The Miami Dolphins may need to take desperate measures at quarterback, as the franchise awaits franchise quarterback Tua Tagovailoa’s prognosis and definitive decision about his long-term future.

Tagovailoa is currently consulting specialists after sustaining the third documented concussion of his NFL career, leaving some doubt about his long-term playing future which hovers like a dark cloud over a Miami Dolphins franchise that began the season with Super Bowl aspirations.

To date, general manager Chris Grier and the Dolphins seem to be content standing pat with the quarterbacks currently on the roster, including former Baltimore Ravens practice squad QB Tyler Huntley.

However, if Miami falls to the Tennessee Titans on Monday night the Dolphins may be forced to take a bold step towards salvaging the season or at least staying afloat until Tagovailoa potentially returns.

Could Miami Dolphins Trade for Russell Wilson?

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson (3) warms up before a preseason game against Detroit Lions at Ford Field in Detroit on Saturday, August 24, 2024.

Justin Fields has guided the Pittsburgh Steelers to a 3-0 start to begin the season, and even though head coach Mike Tomlin hasn’t officially committed to Fields as the starting quarterback moving forward, it’s difficult to imagine Russell Wilson wrestling back the starting job, even once he’s fully healthy.

If Fields has in fact shown Tomlin and the Steelers enough to emerge as the starting quarterback, perhaps Wilson could be exactly what the Dolphins need in the interim to get the offense back on track.

Bleacher Report NFL analyst Kristopher Knox suggests Wilson could be an ideal trade target for the Dolphins.

“Wilson is a terrific insurance policy,” Knox writes. “But the nine-time Pro Bowler could be an even better stopgap option for a team in need of a starter.

“The Miami Dolphins have placed Tua Tagovailoa on injured reserve with his latest concussion, and they are the most obvious landing spot for the 35-year-old. Miami got poor results from Skylar Thompson and Tim Boyle in Week 3. If recent addition Tyler Huntley isn’t any better, the 1-2 Dolphins could become desperate.”

It is entirely possible that the Dolphins will frame their posturing and potential moves at quarterback around what happens Monday night.

Likewise, it may even be a stretch to have viewed Wilson’s disappointing and disjointed 2023 season with the Denver Broncos and come away believing he can even provide competent and consistent quarterback play in 2024.

Still, both the Steelers and Dolphins’ situations bear monitoring and Wilson may ultimately be the most accomplished veteran quarterback available in coming weeks, should Miami look to make a move.
