After not receiving the franchise tag from his former team, Miami Dolphins defensive lineman Christian Wilkins is set to hit the free agency market after not receiving the franchise tag. Wilkins, who turned 28 this past December will be a hot target for multiple teams who need a proven threat and could receive a contract among the top players at his position.
Christian Wilkins Could Receive Between $22-$25 million on Next Contract
According to NFL Network’s Cameron Wolfe, it is reported that Wilkins’ next contract could be in the range of $22 million up to $25 million. Which would put make him a top paid interior defensive lineman amongst players such as Quinnen Williams, Daron Payne, Jeffrey Simmons and Dexter Lawrence.
The former first round draft pick has received interest from multiple teams at this year’s NFL Combine according to The Athletic’s Diana Russini. If Miami can’t agree to terms with Wilkins long term, he will likely be signed by another franchise within the next couple weeks.
Wilkins Posted Career High 9 Sacks for Miami Dolphins in 2023 Season
Wilkins, who played all 17 games this season combined for 65 total tackles and doubled his career high in sacks with 9 total. He also added a forced fumble and 2 fumble recoveries. In his career with Miami, he has proven to stay healthy starting in 77 of a total 81 games and posted at least 10 tackles for loss in 3 straight seasons.
The Dolphins are currently in one of the worst salary cap situations being $28 million over the limit. They have already parted ways with veteran cornerback Xavien Howard to free cap space and Wilkins looks to be next in line. Miami will still be able to negotiate with Wilkins, but he will hit the open market and have the chance to talk to all teams once the franchise tag deadline hits.
