Memphis Tigers Transfer Portal
Transfer Portal. It’s a word that’s both salvation and a demonic force for the coaching profession. First of all: a salute for those football players entering the Memphis Tigers transfer portal. Every practice every team meeting every weight room rep every hour with the playbook- the fans thank you. It may not have worked out here: but as the kids say, if you know, you know.
Many of the NCAA football players going into the transfer portal will find new collegiate homes and scholarships. But the stats show that it is not all of them. The Athletic had a very informative article (a long long time ago in NIL years) that showed 80% of the NCAA transfers found new scholarship homes. Now: the details of the Memphis Tigers Transfer Portal.

Josh Hastings announced his departure for the Memphis Tigers Transfer Portal as well. Josh Hastings, DB, In 2022 he had 17 tackles; 9 assists, 26 total in 8 games. It was thought as the year started that the DB situation might be difficult, and the pass defense had issues at different parts of the season. But Josh Hastings leaving the program had contributed real statistics, and he obviously believes the fit might be better in a new situation.

Coming in, David Kemp was a 3-star recruit out of Bartram Trail HS in Florida. He was listed before the season as suffering from an undisclosed injury, and the Memphis Tiger kicker was Chris Howard. With Chris Howard having an All-AAC (K) season, then David Kemp was not used this year and will take his talents elsewhere. With his recruiting ranking, he most likely will be given a serious look by another team.
Transfer Portal: The Harsh Reality.
The Transfer Portal is officially open December 5, though players are free to announce before that date. But there’s two parts – there’s the leaving and then there’s the portal recruiting. A famous philosopher once said: “Dance with the One That Brung Ya”. That famous philosopher was one Darrell Royal, great coach and then athletic director of the University of Arkansas, during their great Southwest Conference run.
It seems the great majority of the players on the roster have decided to follow the staying track. The fact that the Athletic Department brought back a 6-6 coach shows they have confidence he can retain and expand. Though early, having only 3 players that had roles, but not pivotal players, shows players’ confidence in Coach Silverfield. We’ll follow up a little later to see how Coach is doing on the second part of the task.
NIL Repercussion: Eric Rivers has a profile at Opendorse.com , and you can find the David Kemp profile here on Opendorse.com. Josh Hastings has a profile at Opendorse.com as well. These first three don’t have a huge footprint from NIL standards, but Eric Rivers is slightly higher (from listed activities available). This may have to do with his listed 11.2K Instagram followers. But from a team-grouped NIL profile these 3 particular transfers shouldn’t have a substantial impact on the Memphis Tigers NIL total impact.
