Apparently, the Carolina Panthers could have had Brock Purdy during the 2022 NFL Draft. Unfortunately, then head coach Matt Rhule was “vetoed” when he voted to put the young QB on their draft board.
At least that is what Rhule is claiming while addressing the media on National Signing Day on Wednesday for the Nebraska Cornhuskers.
Carolina Panthers Vetoed Matt Rhule for Brock Purdy Endorsement
Rhule served as the Panthers’ head coach from 2020 to 2022. He was still the team’s tactician during the 2022 draft, when they had the 6th, 94th, 120th, 189th, 199th and 242nd picks.
According to Rhule, he was already familiar with Purdy at the time since he faced the young quarterback and Iowa State when he worked as Baylor’s head coach. But despite recommending to the Panthers to consider taking the signal-caller, the front office had other plans.
“I think Brock Purdy is an amazing player because I played against him at Iowa State,” Rhule shared, via Ari Meirov of The 33rd Team.
“When I was in the draft room at Carolina, I brought his name up. I said, ‘Hey guys, he should be on the draft board.’ I got vetoed on that one.”

It would have been interesting to see what would have happened to the Panthers had they taken Purdy. As everyone knows, the 49ers superstar was taken with the last pick in the draft–262nd overall–to become the “Mr. Irrelevant” of the class.
Considering that the Panthers had Sam Darnold at QB at the time and later on traded for Baker Mayfield, it’s quite understandable why they didn’t feel the need to take another unproven quarterback.
Sure enough, if what Rhule said is true, the Panthers might be regretting that decision now.
Brock Purdy Happy To Land With San Francisco 49ers
For what it’s worth, Brock Purdy admitted recently that he’s happy to be with the San Francisco 49ers. It’s unknown if he would have gotten the same opportunity he had in San Francisco had he been drafted by other teams, but luckily for the 24-year-old, he doesn’t have to think about it.
Purdy is also not holding a grudge against the other QBs drafted before him and all the other teams that snubbed he. At the end of the day, he feels that he landed where he was meant to be.
Now, Purdy is heading to the Super Bowl with a real chance to win it. He is already the best QB of the 2022 class, and he could further solidify that claim with a win on Sunday.
