It was announced Thursday that Kayshon Boutte will be the newest Tiger to don the No. 7 heading into the 2022 season. Boutte joins the likes of LSU greats who were chosen to get the honors to wear the No. 7. The New Iberia native spoke on what the No. 7 means to him:
“7 is bigger than football. It’s about Leadership, Encouragement, Accountability, and Discipline. I had to grow into 7 to understand it already had the characteristics that I was striving for. To be chosen to wear this Legendary number is an honor. I’m excited to be back on the field with my brothers and go to work this season. To do it in Number 7 is a true blessing, following in the footsteps of some of the greatest players in LSU history. Greatness begins now. “
Boutte has totaled 83 catches for 1,224 yards and 14 touchdowns in his two college seasons. Boutte’s 2021 season was cut short due to a season-ending ankle injury. Before Boutte’s suffered the injury, he caught 38 passes for 509 yards and nine touchdowns. In his freshman season, Boutte caught 45 passes for 735 yards and five touchdowns.
The tradition of the No. 7 started back in 2004 when linebacker Ali Highsmith received the honors. Some of the past wearers of the No. 7 include cornerback Patrick Peterson, defensive back Tyrann Mathieu, running back Leonard Fournette, wide receiver DJ Chark and cornerback Derek Stingley Jr.
