Death, taxes, and the LSU football program producing a perennial superstar posed to go early in the first round of the NFL draft. The Tigers have not one but two receivers headed to the NFL next season, led by All-American pass catcher Malik Nabers. Alongside Nabers, the lengthy Brian Thomas Jr. should also hear his name called during the first day of the upcoming NFL draft. However, Nabers has the best chance at usurping former LSU standouts and current league superstars Justin Jefferson (pick 22) and Ja’Marr Chase (pick 5) as the highest-picked former Tiger receiver in the NFL draft.
Unfortunately for Nabers’ draft stock, reports surfaced on Sunday that the speedster is being viewed as ‘high maintenance’ across the NFL. On Monday, Nabers responded to the reports, debunking them by saying, “You know they gotta pick somebody in this draft. I guess they just pick me.” Longtime NFL quarterback and current ESPN personality Robert Griffin III took it one step further, claiming those spreading the rumors about Nabers deserve to get physically assaulted.
Robert Griffin III: Goes to Bat for Malik Nabers
Former first-round pick and Heisman Trophy Award winner Robert Griffin III did not pull any punches when discussing rumors surrounding Malik Nabers and his potential character flaws. RGIII took to Twitter (also known as X), saying, “Whoever spread that Malik Nabers rumor hoping that he drops in the draft deserves to get his a** kicked.”
Nabers and now Griffin III have quickly discredited the rumors that surfaced last weekend. Nabers projects as one of the top receivers in the upcoming NFL draft and could go as early as the third overall pick to the wide receiver needy New England Patriots. However, being labeled as ‘high maintenance’ this late in the draft process could hurt his overall draft stock.
Griffin III continued, saying, “Tearing down a player’s character and hiding behind it being anonymous sources is cowardly.” RGIII took exception with reports around Nabers appearing so late in the draft process without a known source. The former Washington Redskins gunslinger currently works for ESPN as a football analyst after an eight-year NFL career.
Former LSU Football WR Malik Nabers: Monster 2023 Season
Malik Nabers dominated for LSU football last season. The six-foot-one, 188-pound wideout caught 89 passes for 1,569 yards and 14 touchdowns while helping lead LSU to a DI-best 35.5 points per game. Eight times, he surpassed the century mark in receiving yards, highlighted by a 13-catch, 239-yard effort in a win over the Mississippi State Bulldogs.
As a freshman, Nabers joined LSU football in 2021, recording 28 receptions, 417 yards, and four touchdowns. He more than doubled his production the following season, tallying 72 catches for 1,017 yards and three scores. According to NFL Draft Buzz, Nabers trails just former Ohio State Buckeyes standout Marvin Harrison Jr. as the top wideout in the upcoming league draft. The Louisiana native ran a 4.35 40-yard dash at his pro day, one of the best among his peers.
