After what seemed like a breakout season for Justin Herbert a couple of years ago, the Los Angeles Chargers languished at the bottom of the NFL during the previous campaign. In order to fix the predicament, the front office must take a look at the New England Patriots’ Hunter Henry in free agency.
At some point last season, the Chargers struggled to gain momentum after starting with a 5-7 record. Things took a turn for the worse when Justin Herbert suffered a broken finger against the Denver Broncos.
The loss of Herbert meant that the Chargers stood little chance to make the playoffs. This is evident by the end of the season when Los Angeles was in the bottom half of the NFL when it came to offense and defense.
One of the ways Los Angeles can get better next season is by entering free agency with a list of players to target. Among these is Henry, and his potential pairing with Herbert may yield dividends for the Chargers.
Why The Los Angeles Chargers Must Sign Hunter Henry In Free Agency
After three years, the potential return of Henry from the New England Patriots may become possible in free agency. Aaron Schatz explained more in his article for ESPN:
“The prodigal son returns! After three years in New England, I propose that Henry returns to his original team. Gerald Everett is a free agent and new coach Jim Harbaugh always had a strong tight end (Vernon Davis) for his offense in San Francisco. In Henry’s seven NFL seasons (omitting the 2018 season when he was injured), he has ranked in the top 10 in my DYAR measure of receiving value five times.
He has only one season with a below-average DVOA and was sixth among all qualifying tight ends last season. That would make him a valuable red zone target for quarterback Justin Herbert as Harbaugh attempts to recharge the Chargers,” Schartz wrote.
Having Henry back in the Chargers’ lineup may help alleviate their offense-related struggles and put the team back on track. At the very least, his acquisition will help set the tone and lighten Justin Herbert’s load.
With free agency about to start, it’d be interesting to see how much money the Chargers will have for players like Henry. Be on the lookout in the coming days to see how this possible free agent signing will go down.
