BREAKING: Los Angeles Chargers Jim Harbaugh hires Greg Roman as Offensive Coordinator
Post Edit: Greg Roman now hired as Offensive Coordinator for the Los Angeles Chargers.
Jim Harbaugh is expected to reunite with his long-time friend Greg Roman on the Los Angeles Chargers. Jim Harbaugh is expected to hire his long-time friend Greg Roman in a “prominent role” as he continues to build his coaching staff.
Greg Roman and Jim Harbaugh have worked together at a few stops throughout their football career, most recently for the San Francisco 49ers from 2011 to 2014.
The Good Ole Days
Harbaugh and Roman first started working together back at Stanford in 2009. Harbaugh was the head coach of Stanford. He soon became the associate head coach under Jim, and in 2010 was a finalist for the Jim Broyles award (best assistant in college football). In that 2010 season, the Cardinals were 12-1, their only loss to a 4th-ranked Oregon team.

Harbaugh and Roman then moved on to the bigger things at the pro level. When Jim accepted the San Fran job in 2011, Roman went with him. During their 4 year stint in San Francisco, they averaged 23.3 points per game. Their highlight was a Super Bowl 47 appearance where Jim lost to his brother John’s Ravens 34-31.
Greg Roman after Harbaugh
After leaving the 49ers, Roman decided to stay in the NFL. He moved on to the Buffalo Bills to work for Rex Ryan. He then took on the role of offensive coordinator for John Harbaugh’s Ravens to help grow and develop a young Lamar Jackson. The Quarterback/Offensive Coordinator combination worked at first but ran its course before John moved on to Todd Monken this past season.
What Lies Ahead?
No official role has been mentioned yet, but Roman is meeting with LA Charger officials today. Most outlets are stating “prominent role” and mentioning the offensive side. Harbaugh and the Chargers are also expected to hire Mike Devlin as the Offensive Line Coach and Jesse Minter as the Defensive Coordinator, both have a history with John Harbaugh and the Ravens. Minter was also with Jim on the Michigan staff. Jim has also hired strength and conditioning coach Ben Herbert from the University of Michigan. Many familiar names joining him in LA.
Herbert and Roman Union
It will be interesting to see the union of Roman and Justin Herbert, the Los Angeles Chargers high profile quarterback. Greg Roman will be the offensive coordinator and is most famously known for his run game knowledge. Roman has worked more recently with the skill sets of Colin Kaepernick, Lamar Jackson, Tyrod Taylor, and EJ Manuel. He can also claim Andrew Luck on his resume. Most will be interested to see what his official role will be.

Would make sense if they hired him to be the run game coordinator but with no play calling responsibilities.
Doesn’t seem to fit with Herbert as QB… but I’m sure harbaugh will find a way to build his system around their strengths
