Super Bowl 58 – Blind Quarterback Comparison

The 2024 Super Bowl storylines are heating up as we head into the penultimate weekend of the football season. One thing that will be discussed at great lengths – the Quarterback position.

Purdy vs. Mahomes in the Playoffs

Below is everyone’s favorite activity – the Blind QB Resume. Do your best not to read ahead, and take a look at the stats in each category. We are trying to keep it simple – Yards, TDs, Interceptions, and records. Other things are important, sure, but as we warm up for the Super Bowl, this is a nice introduction into some of the narratives that will start to spin.

    Category – QB A (16 games) B (16 games)  C (17 games)
    Yards 4,016 4,280 4,180
    TDs 21 31 27
    Interceptions 14 11 14
    Record 9-8 12-5 11-6

At first glance, it is pretty easy to decide which Quarterback you would probably choose at the helm for your team this past season. Quarterback B leads in every category. Some may not be surprised to hear that for a good amount of time, this Quarterback was an MVP candidate.

    Who’s who?

    Time to reveal the surprise…

    Quarterback A = Trevor Lawrence

    Quarterback B = Brock Purdy

    Quarterback C = Patrick Mahomes

    Regular Season Narratives

There is probably no surprise to see that Quarterback B and C are upcoming Super Bowl LVIII participants. Most of these storylines have been around all season, and will resurface during the media extravaganza.

Brock Purdy and Patrick Mahomes set to face off in Super Bowl 58.

Brock Purdy is only as good as his weapons. Brock Purdy is carried by Christian McCaffrey, Deebo Samuel, George Kittle, and Brandon Aiyuk. Kyle Shanahan and his system are carrying Brock Purdy. Brock Purdy is a game manager, not a play maker.

Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs can not replicate last season. The Chiefs offense is lacking explosion. The wide receivers on this team are letting Patrick Mahomes down. Patrick Mahomes is lashing out at the refs.

The list goes on and on for both of these quarterbacks and the excuses that can be made, or the rationale for their seasons. Both of these quarterbacks have been magical this postseason, Mahomes more than Purdy, but Purdy has still had his moments to help lead these comebacks.

I think that each of these two quarterbacks will be discussed ad nauseam for the next 10 days, so I won’t bore you with all the stats quite yet. The one that I will mention – Patrick Mahomes has had zero turnover worthy plays in this playoff run (all away games), while Purdy has turned the ball over once (both games at home).

Why bring Trevor Lawrence into the discussion?

There is a sneaky rationale to Quarterback A. Trevor Lawrence had a down year this past year. Plenty of stats were talked about throughout the season. The Jaguars were bad on 3rd down, bad in the red zone, and a huge disappointment down the stretch. The Jaguars will more than likely extend Trevor his 5th year option, probably in the realm of 20 to 30 million dollars. The next move will be interesting though – how much is Trevor Lawrence worth? I think that 2024 is a prove it type of year. Does he demand the same amount of money as Josh Allen, Joe Burrow, Justin Herbert, or does a decision need to be made about the amount of financial resources allocated towards him.

The media has spun each of these quarterbacks in a negative way at certain times, but now as they enter the super bowl, both are coming out smelling like roses. Some food for thought as we head into the super bowl, then the offseason.
