The Los Angeles Chargers will own the fifth overall selection in the 2024 NFL Draft. They need a wide receiver and help on the defensive side of the football. Jim Harbaugh takes over as the head coach of this football team. He is an upgrade at head coach from Brandon Staley.
The Chargers people think will be better next year alone because of it. Los Angeles Chargers traded away Keenan Allen, a stud wide receiver to the Chicago Bears. They also released wide receiver Mike Williams in the offseason. Los Angeles with the fifth pick you would think should take a wide receiver in the 2024 NFL Draft.
Malik Nabers from LSU, Marvin Harrison Jr. from Ohio State, and Romeo Odunze from Washington can very well be available with that fifth selection. It also appears that the Chargers are trying to rebuild the roster.
The Los Angeles Chargers Could Do the Unthinkable and trade Quarterback Justin Herbert To Another Team and Draft Quarterback J.J. McCarthy With the Fifth Overall Pick
Herbert is 26 years old and signed a five-year contract worth $262.5 million with $218.7 million of it guaranteed, according to Spotrac back in 2023. Justin Herbert has yet to win a playoff game in his NFL career and was the sixth overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.
Herbert last season completed 65.1% of his passes for 3,134 yards, 20 touchdowns, and seven interceptions. Any NFL team would love to trade for Justin Herbert. What if the Chargers are not going to take a wide receiver with the fifth pick and what if they draft quarterback J.J. McCarthy from Michigan instead?
That would set the NFL world on fire if that happened. McCarthy was coached by Harbaugh at Michigan the last few years and Jim Harbaugh loves J.J. McCarthy. What if he wants to start from scratch with the Chargers? There are a lot of teams that do want to draft him.
He won a National Championship last season and completed 72.3% of his passes last season for 2,991 yards, 22 touchdowns, and four interceptions. There are scouts that love J.J. McCarthy. Everyone is thinking wide receiver with the fifth pick for the Los Angeles Chargers. However, this could be the wrench of the NFL Draft if they selected McCarthy and traded Herbert elsewhere.
