The Texas Longhorns have received a much-needed commitment to their 2023 class. This came in the form of five-star safety Derek Williams Jr. The 6’2″, 185 pound commit comes out of Westgate High school in New Iberia, Louisiana. He is ranked thirty-seventh nationally in the 2023 class rankings of 247Sports Composite and forty-fifth nationally in the 247Sports rankings. The photo included below is of Derek Williams Jr.
What does this mean for Texas?
The commitment of Williams certainly adds to the recruiting surge the Texas Longhorns have experienced in the past couple of weeks. This propels the Texas Longhorns to having the third overall recruitment class for 2023. Interesting note about the commitment of Williams; he made the commitment to Texas three days after his official visit to the University of Texas at Austin on June 24, 2022.
Above all, the lack of continuity in the secondary of the Texas Longhorns; the benefit of Williams should certainly be immediate. As previously mentioned in a prior article, Texas Longhorns had nine different coaches at the defensive back position over the eight seasons of 2014 to 2021. A high value defensive back commit is always welcome.
