The Las Vegas Raiders moving on from Jimmy Garoppolo seems more like a formality now than it is a question in doubt. This team seems intent on finding a new quarterback soon as they look forward to a resurgent campaign in 2024.
Newly hired offensive coordinator Luke Getsy already has an idea in mind as to what the Raiders are planning for, but it doesn’t seem like he’s ready to spill the beans just yet.
Las Vegas Raiders OC Luke Getsy Keeping His Options Open
The idea of incoming second-year stud Aidan O’Connell taking over as Las Vegas’ QB1 seems far-fetched, which means that this team will likely need to bring a new quarterback in either through free agency or via the draft.
If you ask Getsy, though, the new Vegas coach is choosing to keep his options open:
“There’s not one in particular,” he responded when asked about what he’s looking for in a QB, via Paul Gutierrez of ESPN. “I think you’ve got to play into the players that you have and the things that they do really well. I think that’s what’s cool about this draft … there’s a lot of different types of guys, and it’s about who can do things to the level that it’s a difference maker.
“You try to get as many dynamic guys on your team as you can. I wouldn’t ever want to box myself into a corner with one particular style.”
There have been a few names that have been thrown around as potential QB recruits for the Raiders. One of them is Justin Fields of the Chicago Bears, who ironically, had a rather unsavory relationship with Getsy last season in the Windy City.
The Raiders own the No. 13 pick of the upcoming draft, which means that it’s highly unlikely that they will be able to get their hands on one of the top QB prospects of this class. Aiming for the second tier of quarterbacks is perhaps more feasible for them, with the likes of J.J. McCarthy or Bo Nix presenting themselves as viable options.
Either way, it is clear that the Raiders offense is going to look very different this coming season.
