The LA Rams may reap rewards in the 2024 NFL Draft if, as anticipated, there is a run on quarterbacks before their 19th overall selection comes up.
In an insightful article published on April 6, 2024, Brock Vierra of Rams Wire astutely notes:
“[T]he more QBs drafted before pick 19, the better. The Rams are on the verge of something special and the desperation of others could bring a fruitful harvest for GM Les Snead and the organization.”
Numerous Quarterbacks Are Likely to Be Selected in the First Round of the 2024 NFL Draft
By all accounts, the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft is going to feature multiple selections of quarterbacks. Indeed, many are forecasting that the first four selections in the draft will be quarterbacks.
The Washington Post predicts six quarterbacks — Caleb Williams, J.J. McCarthy, Jayden Daniels, Drake Maye, Michael Penix Jr., and Bo Nix — will be selected in the first round.
Additionally, some predict Spencer Rattler may be the seventh quarterback selected in the first round.
As a Matter of Simple Mathematics, the LA Rams Will Benefit From a Run on Quarterbacks
As Rams Wire explains:
“Expected first-round quarterbacks include Caleb Williams, Drake Maye, Jayden Daniels, Michael Penix Jr., J.J. McCarthy and Bo Nix. Potentially Spencer Rattler could throw himself into the mix as well.
“So how does this help the Rams? Considering the Rams don’t have an immediate need at the position, that’s six or seven selections at a position that probably isn’t a priority to Los Angeles. That will also push back several top talents, especially on the defensive side of the ball.
“With the projected selections of Marvin Harrison Jr., Malik Nabers, Joe Alt, Olu Fashanu, Rome Odunze, Brock Bowers, Terrion Arnold and Dallas Turner inside the top 15, that’s fifteen prospects … [who will likely be off the board before the] Rams [selection] … [comes up] – meaning there could be a potential drop in projected targets.
“Top talents like Nate Wiggins, Chop Robinson, Byron Murphy II, Jer’Zhan Newton and Brian Thomas Jr. could become available to the Rams….
If Rams Wire is right, and it seems like they are, this represents a major opportunity for the Rams. Wiggins, Robinson, Murphy, and Newton are defensive studs. Thomas is a tall, fast, über-talented wide receiver from LSU.
If the Rams sit back and let the other teams chase quarterbacks, they will be in a position to land one of these top-notch players.
The great Aaron Donald was the No. 13 selection by the Rams in the 2014 NFL Draft. Although some of the players selected ahead of Donald, including Khalil Mack and Mike Evans, are terrific players, no rational person would argue that Donald was not the best player selected in the 2014 NFL Draft.
After Mr. Donald’s retirement this offseason, it would be only fitting for the Rams, a decade down the track, to replicate their feat by selecting a top-notch player in the middle of the first round.
