Kenny Pickett has finally suited up in live game action for the Pittsburgh Steelers. All three Steelers Quarterbacks performed better than expected. Pickett’s performance jumped off the screen. Pickett was very efficient in the slowed down preseason version of Matt Canada’s offense. We will dive a bit deeper into Kenny Pickett’s performance and what it means for the Steelers Quarterback competition going forward. (Potential Mason Rudolph Trade)
What went well during Kenny Pickett’s debut for the Pittsburgh Steelers
Kenny Pickett was very efficent in his first live NFL action. He completed 13-15 pass attempts to go along with 95 yards and two scores. In addition, he added 3 rush attempts for 16 yards one of which being a very clutch third down conversion. One thing the Pittsburgh Steelers have been missing for some time now is a mobile quarterback. Kenny Pickett will bring the athletic ability he showcased in pre-season game week one.
One thing that has never been in question is Kenny’s leadership skills. He had complete command of the offense once he entered the game. Some may say his success in this game was due to playing Seattle’s third string defense and to pump the breaks. However, let’s not forget he was also out there with the Steelers third and fourth stringers as well. At the end of the day the offense was a well oiled machine and Kenny made the plays needed to win. His throws were accurate, on time and if his first read was not there he was able to go through his progressions and create time with his mobility.
What Kenny Pickett will need to do to become the Pittsburgh Steelers Franchise Quarterback
Kenny Pickett has undeniable athleticism for the quarterback position however, that does not mean it should be relied on as much. Kenny definitely had a welcome to the NFL moment on two occasions. He took two sacks on plays he tried to use his mobility. He quickly realized NFL players are a lot smarter and a lot faster than the college level. Even if it was against third and fourth stringers on one of the NFL’s worth defenses. There is no doubt Pickett is An absolute stud football player but, part of progressing in the NFL is adjusting to the game. There are certain situations where it’s best to throw it away to cut your losses and he learned that first hand.
Conclusion
There is no doubt in my mind that Kenny Pickett will be a star in this league and the future of the Pittsburgh Steelers. I urge everyone to appreciate his performance but curb your excitement. At the end of the day it is only week one of the preseason. There is still a lot of football to be played.
