The Kansas City Chiefs may have made it to the Super Bowl three times in the last five years, but despite that experience, a former NFL quarterback doesn’t see them overcoming the Baltimore Ravens this time around.
Kansas City and Baltimore are set to face each other in the AFC Championship on Sunday. And while the Ravens are inexperienced on the said stage, ex-NFL QB Mark Sanchez expressed his belief that they are more than capable to taking down the Chiefs.
Sanchez did acknowledge that it’s hard to bet against a group led by Mahomes. They have won the Super Bowl twice in three tries, so they know how to win the big games. Nonetheless, the player-turned-analyst couldn’t help but feel good about the Ravens’ chances this time around.
“You never want to bet against Mahomes, and I might regret it, but if I gotta pick I’m going San Fran. vs. Baltimore,” Sanchez said during an appearance on the Dan Patrick Show.
While Sanchez didn’t elaborate on his reasoning for picking the Ravens, it’s not hard to see why he likes Baltimore. After all, Lamar Jackson just had an MVP-worthy season in 2023, and he has maintained that level of play in the postseason.

It’s also not just Mark Sanchez who thinks the Kansas City Chiefs will lose in the conference championship. Even the odds and various data analysis say the same thing as well.
In fact, on the ESPN Matchup Predictor, the Chiefs were given just a 36.4 percent chance to win. So it’s not like Sanchez’s prediction is a bold one.
It is definitely intriguing to hear someone with experience at the highest level share their predictions, though. Sanchez was able to make it to two AFC Championship games with the New York Jets during his career, though he failed both times. With that being said, his words surely carry some weight.
Sure enough, the Chiefs already know that they are heavy underdogs in the contest. The fact that they are playing on the road makes things even more difficult. However, playing a “villain” role is something Patrick Mahomes and Co. are embracing, so it’s certainly wrong to count them out.
