The NFL season may be over, but that has not stopped Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce from picking up more hardware. On Sunday night, he won Athlete of the Year at the People’s Choice Awards. Prior to the event, he called his nomination, which saw him listed among names like Giannis Antetokounmpo, LeBron James, Lionel Messi, Steph Curry, and Simone Bules, a “f***ing joke.”

Kelce’s nomination for the event almost surely had everything to do with his relationship with Taylor Swift. The two became the talk of social media and pop culture early in the season when it was revealed that they were dating. Ever since then, Swift’s presence at Chiefs games have been a source of contention on social media. Many (older) male fans do not like that she is shown on camera for less than 1% of the game; others do not think it is that big of a deal.

In fact, Kelce’s relationship with Swift saw a rise in viewership around the NFL, particularly among female viewers. This year’s Super Bowl between the Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers was the highest-viewed Super Bowl in history.

Before winning Super Bowl LVIII, Swift had taken home the Grammy Award for Album of the Year, prompting Kelce to say he needed to bring home some hardware too. He did, with the win over the 49ers, and on Sunday night, they both added to their collective trophy case.

Whereas Kelce took home one People’s Choice Award for Athlete of the Year, Swift took home four: Female Artist, Pop Artist, Concert Tour, and Social Celebrity.

Fans on social media had mixed reactions to the couple’s five combined wins:

Coco not winning athlete of the year to Travis Kelce is snub of the decade

    — Don Wick 🕴 (@Watzit_Tewya) February 19, 2024

On his “New Heights” podcast, Kelce questioned why Green Bay Packers safety Jonathan Owens was not nominated for Athlete of the Year. After all, Owens is married to Olympics legend Simone Biles, arguable the greatest gymnast in the history of the sport.
